George Oakley post match Wednesday

Post-match at Pittodrie with opening scorer George Oakley, 27th February 2019

We caught up with George to discuss ‘that’ goal and a massive three points for Accies.

A touch of the ‘Marco Van Bastens’ about the goal?

From what I remember I just got on the right side of the centre half and in my head I thought “I’m just gonna hit this.” I’ve always been told if you don’t shoot you don’t score. It was a great feeling. I can’t remember scoring one better.

You’ve come from Caley, coming off the bench mostly. What difference has it been playing every week, being a number 9 and getting goals?

I’ve just come down here to show what I can do. I’ve scored three goals so far and I’m just going to keep showing everyone what I can do at this level. That was my aim all along, since I came up to Scotland. I’m just happy to show everyone what I can do.

Were you expecting more from Aberdeen- or is this just a reflection on how well Accies were playing?

A bit of both. We stopped them from playing. We worked our socks off and everyone came in after the game absolutely knackered. But we are knackered and we won, so we’re all going home enjoying it. Credit to the boys.

It showed great character. Coming here after the weekend there might have been a fear factor?

Yeah, but it’s been nailed into us since the gaffer’s been here to show no fear. You can’t change what’s in the past, so why dwell on it? We might as well just move on, and that’s what we’ve done tonight.

The manager says he expects his strikers to defend from the front like Kenny Dalglish and Ian Rush. Is that something you buy into as well?

100%. Even if I’m not playing well you’ll always get 100% out of me. I think the gaffer saw that in me when we were at Inverness together. He knows what he’s going to get every week. That’s why I’m here.

Did you have absolute faith in your ability to come to Accies and make your mark?

I never doubted myself. It’s just about getting the chance, and I’ve been given that. I’ve just got to show people what I can do. It’s no pressure, it’s just playing with a smile on my face. I’m really enjoying myself at Accies so far. The boys and the staff are fantastic, and the gaffer’s amazing with me. So, what more can you ask for?

How big a result could tonight be for us going forward?

Yeah, it’s big, because we’re going out there to win games. We want to forget about the position in the league. It’s just about what’s in front of us. We move onto the next game now. We’ll have a nice night having come here and won, but we’ve got to move on to Motherwell. That’s the most important thing.
